It is becoming more cost-effective to buy an existing house rather than build one
Absa’s housing review for the fourth quarter of 2014 shows that the price difference between buying an existing house and building one from scratch has shrunk to the lowest level in four years. It now costs an average 29,5% less to buy a house than to build a new one. Eighteen months ago the price difference was still around 36%. The narrowing cost gap is a result of the prices of existing properties rising faster recently than building costs.
